UH Manoa Study Abroad Programs

The University of Hawai'i at Manoa has two study abroad programs

UHM Study Abroad Center (UHMSAC) and Manoa International Exchange (MIX)

Here are some key differences:

UHM credits for each course applicable toward UHM degrees (Grades abroad WILL affect UHM GPA).

For fees, SAC charges their own flat Study Abroad fee (program-specific). SAC also handles airfare, housing, excursions, meals, and facilitates with visa arrangements.

The host institution arranges housing for the students.

Credits earned overseas are transfer credits (Grades abroad will NOT affect UHM GPA).

UHM students pay UHM tuition. Students are responsible for handling all payments associated with living and studying abroad. Students are also responsible for all travel and visa arrangements.

Depending on the program, the host institution OR the student will make housing arrangements.

I decided to apply for the Manoa International Exchange Program because I felt that I would have more freedom to pursue my ventures in South Korea as it is an extremely flexible structure where the student does everything on their own, which fits my goal of becoming an independent person. In addition, the program is used to dealing with students who are pursuing their abroad experience in the Asian continent as they offer much more choices of universities to study abroad in Asia.

MIX Application Process

Timeline2-1536x864.jpg

My Experience with doing the MIX application was fairly strait forward as it is an online Google form that is accessible through their website. I would recommend having a list of universities in mind of what country you would want to go to and at least 5 universities that you would want to attend. I will say that the only time I did stress out with the application was when I was answering the required four prompts that you have to write in the application. I remember having 2-3 pages for each prompt, which I do not recommend :,) but I thought it would make my application look stronger. Additionally, always recommend scheduling an appointment with the MIX advisor and you'll need one Letter of Recommendation from a faculty member so I would do this as soon as possible as I remember being anxious of when my LOR would be submitted.

For additional information to apply check out the official MIX website for additional requirements + application fees: https://manoa.hawaii.edu/mix/outbound/apply/

Acceptance + Next Steps

Following application submission, once accepted MIX emails you with a Nomination and Next Steps email that includes information about your selected institution and the deadline for accepting or rejecting the partner university's nomination. Included is a pre-departure checklist and an online CANVAs course. It's critical to remember due dates and get started early to prevent missing deadlines for getting necessary documentation. It is advised that you finish the course and read the material thoroughly.
